WE VISITED DURING: November / Summer
WE STAYED IN: North Thompson, Heritage 4 bed.
KIDS AGES: 5 and 7
PROS: The accommodation was a stone's throw from shops and restaurants.
CONS: Living and sleeping areas are dark, and not very comfortable.
WILL VISIT AGAIN: Yes
Rottnest Island's heritage cottages on North Thompson Bay promise a unique, historic experience, but the reality is that it's a bit of a miss when you have small kids. For those with toddlers, you need to know that each room is on a different level separated by large steps, and ours had a bathroom located outside through the courtyard.
While it's lacking in modern comforts, it's location was extremely convenient being right at the back of the pizzeria Frankies, and close to other shops and a playground area. It's beachfront location offers incredible views, and we very much enjoyed watching the crowds go by sitting on the porch.
The accommodation is located in front of Thompson Bay North, with a set of steps right outside. It's also a 10 minute bike ride to the Basin, and about the same again to South Thompson Bay where you'll find a renovated playground just past the new hotel Samphire.
Overall, the heritage cottages do provide a unique experience, do manage your expectations as they are called heritage for a reason.
